Designed as a Community-Based PGY1 Program, the Shields Residency focuses on health system specialty pharmacy. The program offers hands-on experience in the intricacies of complex medication regimens, clinical pharmacy, operations, and teaching.

Health systems across the country partner with Shields to help transform their specialty pharmacy practice. The residency provides insights into the specific challenges that health systems face as they negotiate the dynamic specialty pharmacy landscape and provide their patients with life-changing and life-saving medications.

What competencies are developed during the residency?

The residency provides a variety of core and elective learning experiences. Besides four weeks of orientation, core learning experiences include:

  • Outpatient Clinical Pharmacy
  • Advanced Outpatient Clinical Pharmacy
  • Population Health
  • Business Development and Health System Experience
  • Ambulatory Care: Transplant

What is the structure of the residency program?

After a 4-week orientation, the program proceeds through five 6-week core experiences and selected elective experiences of 4-6 weeks each. Throughout the program, residents will participate in project management and research, staffing (with on-call duties), and professional presentations. The residency lasts for one year.
